CHICAGO – Angry Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he was "disappointed" that Cardinals pitcher Matt Belisle hit Anthony Rizzo with a pitch in apparent retaliation for Dan Haren hitting Matt Holliday in the helmet in the fifth inning Friday.
"We don't start stuff, but we will stop stuff," Maddon said.
Maddon said it was "ridiculous" to suggest Belisle was simply trying to throw inside when he hit the back of Rizzo's leg in the seventh. Belisle and St. Louis manager Mike Matheny were ejected.
"I don't know who put out the hit," Maddon said. "I don't know if Tony Soprano is in the dugout. I didn't see him in there. But we're not going to put up with it, from them or anybody else. … I just want them to know this: We're not going to take that. Very simple."
Haren said he accidentally hit Holliday.
