Macalester College is expected to name Siena College assistant Abe Woldeslassie as men's basketball coach this week.

Woldeslassie graduated from Macalester in 2008, averaging 17 points and 5.4 assists per game during his two seasons at the school. Before going to Siena, he was an assistant at Davidson for three seasons, and also coached at Dartmouth and Division III Bowdoin College in Maine.

It will be the first head coaching job for Woldeslassie, who played high school basketball at St. Thomas Academy.

He replaces Tim Whittle, whose teams compiled a 35-190 record in his nine seasons at Macalester, including 19-161 in the MIAC. The Scots were 2-18 in conference this season and 3-22 overall. Whittle resigned last month.

Macalester will also need to name a new women's basketball coach. Former University of Minnesota assistant Kelly Roysland, who coached for four season at the St. Paul school, is returning to the Gophers as an assistant to recently named coach Lindsay Whalen.

Carleton hires football coach

Tom Journell, who has spent the previous six seasons as the head coach of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, was hired as the new football coach at Carleton. He replaces Bob Pagel, who resigned in February after six seasons.

Journell was also the head coach at Elmhurst (Ill.) from 2004 to 2007. Before coaching at Elmhurst, Journell was an assistant coach at UW-River Falls for 15 seasons.
