A 19-year-old exchange student from France has died of injuries suffered when she was hit by a car last week while crossing a street in St. Paul, according to Macalester College.
Cleo Louise Marie Thiberge, who had arrived in Minnesota just the day before she was hit, had planned to study at Macalester this semester, the school said.
She was severely injured Wednesday when she was hit by an SUV while she was walking on Grand Avenue at Hamline Avenue.
She was hospitalized for several days before she died on Sunday, the school said.
"This is a deep loss to our college community," said the Rev. Lucy Forster-Smith, a chaplain at the school said in a message sent out Monday to the Macalester community. "Our deepest condolences and care go out to Cleo's parents, Brigitte Edrom and Olivier Thiberge, her brother and sister, family and friends. Please hold Cleo's family in your thoughts and prayers."
The vehicle that hit her was traveling east on Grand and made a turn south onto Hamline when it struck Thiberge. St. Paul police said it appeared she was "in or near the crosswalk" at the time. She was pinned under the vehicle.
Thiberge was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with severe injuries.
Police said the driver was cooperating with police and was not arrested.
