Luke Walton is hired to coach Kings a day after Lakers let him go

April 14, 2019 at 12:32AM

Luke Walton didn't go long without work, and Sacramento didn't go long without a coach. Walton, let go by the Lakers on Friday, agreed Saturday to coach the Kings.

According to multiple reports, Kings General Manager Vlade Divac and Walton agreed on a four-year deal. The Kings contacted Walton an hour after the Lakers dumped him.

The Kings fired Dave Joerger after he went 98-148 in three seasons, the same record Walton produced in three seasons with Los Angeles.

The Kings went 39-43 this season, nine games out of a playoff spot but their best season since 44-38 in 2005-06.

Also Thursday, the Kings extended Divac's contract through the 2022-23 season, the same stretch said to be covered in Walton's deal.

Bad call

Amir Johnson was busted showing Philadelphia teammate Joel Embiid his cellphone on the bench late in a Game 1 playoff loss, and his coach wasn't happy. Sixers coach Brett Brown called it "completely unacceptable."

"It's not something that we are about," Brown said.

Johnson was caught by TV cameras scrolling through his phone late in the fourth quarter with the Sixers down 16 points. Johnson showed Embiid, then slid it into his warmup pants pocket.

"I just looked down because he said his daughter was extremely sick and he was checking on her," Embiid said.
