NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country star Luke Bryan has canceled a scheduled appearance at the "CMT Artists of the Year" television special on Tuesday due to a death in the family.

His brother-in-law, Ben Lee Cheshire, died Saturday and Bryan is staying in Georgia with family, according to Bryan's publicist.

The reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year was due to be honored Nashville, Tennessee, along with Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line and Keith Urban. Cindy Finke, spokeswoman for CMT, said the event will feature a special performance to honor Bryan in his absence.

Merle Haggard is scheduled to receive the Artist of a Lifetime award during the event at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.
