For past two years, drivers in the east metro have navigated lane closures as the Minnesota Department of Transportation reconstructed Interstate 94 between Mounds Boulevard and Century Avenue. The good news is that the project is almost done.

But before the $52 million project wraps up this month, motorists will have to endure one more round of lane closures that will impact overnight travel.

This week, the freeway will be reduced to a single lane in both directions from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday along with off-peak closures as crews remove equipment used to set up a movable barrier and put down permanent pavement markings.

Additionally the following ramp closures have been extended for a couple more weeks:

  • Southbound Hwy. 61/Etna Street to eastbound I-94 through the end of October.
  • Northbound Hwy. 61 to eastbound I-94 through the end of October.
  • Burns Avenue/Hudson Place (The McKnight Road ramp) to eastbound I-94 through Oct. 16.

Meanwhile drivers in Minneapolis will find lane closures on the stretch of I-94 between Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center this week.

Crews will be working on the Camden Bridge resulting in the freeway being down to one lane during off-peak hours and two lanes during rush hours between 49th Avenue and Dowling Avenue. The ramp from 49th Avenue to eastbound I-94 also will be closed.

MnDOT expects the work in Minneapolis to be completed by Saturday.
