Local firm chosen for Southdale work

Renovation will be complete by year's end

Work on a big renovation at Southdale, the world's first enclosed mall in Edina, was awarded to Minneapolis-based Kraus-Anderson Construction Co.

The 239,378-square-foot renovation will feature a new concourse, food court, entrances, elevators, stairs and other finishes.

Construction is expected to be completed by December 2012. Kraus-Anderson says it will operate two shifts to complete the work in time for the next holiday shopping season..

Kraus-Anderson is no stranger to shopping center work. The company built Southtown Shopping Center in Bloomington, renovated Calhoun Square in Uptown and redeveloped Brookdale.

Here's an interesting tidbit: The company built the original Dayton's store in downtown Minneapolis -- now Macy's -- in 1902.
