Blues' OT hero is up to the challenge again

– Kevin Shattenkirk scored the winner in the tiebreaker for the second consecutive night, and the St. Louis Blues beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Friday night for their fourth victory in a row.

"It helps when you get to go a little more often," said Shattenkirk, whose shootout goal Thursday beat Nashville 5-4. "It helps when you're trying to put your team up by a goal and you're not down by a goal. That pressure is tremendous, especially on the road."

Ryan Reaves and David Backes scored in regulation for the Blues, who netted two goals in the game's first 2:35 before the Hurricanes rallied to send the game into overtime.

Defensemen Justin Faulk and Ryan Murphy scored for Carolina, which had its three-game winning streak stopped, but the Hurricanes have earned points in nine of 11 games this month.

Carolina's Anton Khudobin made one save but allowed two goals before he was pulled 2:35 in and replaced by Cam Ward, who stopped all 29 shots he faced.

•BLANK SLATE: Semyon Varlamov made 23 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators 3-0 in Denver. Jarome Iginla, Maxime Talbot, and Gabriel Landeskog had goals.

•PENGUINS WIN IN OT: Defenseman Simon Despres scored 2:21 into overtime, and Pittsburgh rallied late and beat New Jersey 2-1 in Newark, N.J. Chris Kunitz tied the score with a power-play goal with 3:11 left in regulation, beating New Jersey's Cory Schneider, who made 41 saves.

•'PATS' ON THE BACK: Patrick Kane had two goals and an assist, and Patrick Sharp assisted on all four goals in the Blackhawks' 4-1 victory over Anaheim, Chicago's third in a row over the NHL-leading Ducks at Honda Center.
