Lakeville's Regan Smith eighth in women's 200-meter backstroke

Lakeville's Regan Smith finished eighth in the women's 200-meter backstroke Saturday at the world swimming championships, where another teen--Australia's Kaylee McKeown--broke the world junior record that Smith set a day earlier.

Smith, 15, finished the final in two minutes, 7.42 seconds. Friday, she swam a world junior record time of 2:07.19 at the meet in Budapest, Hungary. McKeown, 16, lowered the mark with a time of 2:06.76 as she finished fourth in the final.

Australia's Emily Seebohm won the event in 2:05.68, with Hungary's Katinka Hosszu second (2:05.85) and Kathleen Baker of the U.S. third (2:06.48).

Practice rounds and pro-ams get underway Monday for the 25th 3M Championship at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine. The annual PGA Tour Champions stop for golfers 50-and-over is the 17th of 27 events on tour this season. The field features 17 of the top 20 players on the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points list, headed by Minnesota native Tom Lehman, Bernhard Langer, Scott McCarron and Kenny Perry. Among the players making their 3M debut are David Toms, Steve Flesch and Wisconsin natives Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker. The 54-hole tournament begins Friday. Admission all week is free, as is parking and shuttle service from Anoka County Airport.
