Les Miles, a football coach without a team, and Kansas, a football team without a coach, were finalizing a deal to fill those gaps Friday.
Various news outlets, led by Sports Illustrated, reported that an announcement is imminent.
Miles, 65, would replace David Beatty, already fired. Miles led LSU to two SEC titles and the 2007 national championship in 12 seasons before being fired in 2016, and he coached Oklahoma State before that. He has 141 coaching victories in 16 seasons.
Miles and Kansas athletic director Jeff Long worked together at Michigan in the 1980s, and Long also tried to hire Miles when he was athletic director at Arkansas before coming to Kansas.
Kansas is on its fourth head coach since Mark Mangino's reign ended in 2009, and the Jayhawks (3–7 overall, 1–6 Big 12) are guaranteed their 22nd losing record in the conference in the past 23 seasons. They've been to four bowl games since 1995, haven't won a conference championship in a half-century and lost 35 of their past 37 Big 12 games.
Miles reached a settlement on his contract with LSU on Thursday, freeing him to take another job.
'Big Game' postponed
The annual Big Game between Stanford and California that had been scheduled for Saturday was postponed two weeks because of the air quality in the Bay Area resulting from a wildfire 150 miles to the north.
Cal announced Friday that the game would be played Dec. 1 in Berkeley.
