A jockey took a spill from his horse during a race at Shakopee’s Canterbury Park on Saturday and was rushed to a Minneapolis hospital with unknown injuries, officials said.
Veteran jockey Rusty Shaw was riding Classy Star when he tumbled off the horse at the top of the home stretch, said Canterbury spokesman Jeff Maday. He was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was in critical condition late Saturday.
During his first scheduled race of two for the day, Shaw’s horse fell and he “was thrown forward to the ground with great force,” Maday said. It did not appear that the horse rolled over him.
Shaw has been riding since at least 1987 and competing at Canterbury for several seasons.
