Gophers running back James Johannesson is transferring to North Dakota, he confirmed Sunday.
Johannesson rushed for a school record 6,158 yards at Fargo South High School but didn't see any playing time for the Gophers the past two years. Minnesota has two sophomores leading the way in rushing, in Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks, followed by a junior college transfer in Kobe McCrary.
Johannesson had a standout performance in this year's spring game, rushing 22 times for 130 yards and a touchdown. He still has three years of eligibility remaining and will be able to play for the Fighting Hawks next fall.
The story was first reported by WDAY in Fargo.
