Victor Martinez hit three home runs, the Tigers pounded out six as a team and Detroit rallied from an early hole to beat the host Kansas City Royals 10-4 in the opener of a four-game series.

But there was just a little bit of melancholy in the Tigers clubhouse, the fallout of an injury to J.D. Martinez that could keep the outfielder out for up to six weeks.

Martinez was tracking a fly ball in the second inning when he hit the wall. He left the game and was taken for an X-ray, which revealed a non-displaced fracture in his right elbow. He will have a CT scan Friday.

"We feel bad for J.D. It looked innocent," said the Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler.

Victor Martinez hit a pair of solo shots and Nick Castellanos went deep before James McCann homered off Royals reliever Luke Hochevar leading off the seventh to tie the score at 4-4. Miguel Cabrera followed moments later with a two-run shot that gave the Tigers their first lead.

Detroit added three more runs in the eighth before Martinez hit his third homer in the ninth.

Oakland 5, Texas 1: Colby Lewis lost his no-hit bid in the ninth inning when Max Muncy opened with a double that glanced off right fielder Nomar Mazara's glove, settling for a two-hitter as the Rangers beat the host Athletics. Lewis was perfect until walking Yonder Alonso with two outs in the eighth.

Muncy led off the ninth with a drive to deep right. Mazara, a rookie who made a nice running catch to rob Muncy in the third, ran hard as he angled back to the corner. Mazara tracked down this ball but couldn't hold onto it as he crashed into the padded wall.

"I thought he was going to get to it a lot easier," said the 36-year-old Lewis, who improved to 6-0 while lowering his ERA to 2.81. "It is what it is. You can't throw your arms up in the air and get all mad about it. You have to go back to work."

Baltimore 5, Boston 1: Tyler Wilson gave up three hits over eight innings, Adam Jones added a home run and three RBI and the Orioles beat the host Red Sox. Baltimore scored three runs in the first four innings, then added two in fifth. The Orioles have hit 33 home runs in their past 13 games.

Seattle 6, Tampa Bay 4: Dae-Ho Lee drove in three runs, James Paxton went six effective innings and the Mariners avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

National League

New York 6, Pittsburgh 4: Neil Walker and Michael Conforto gave the host Mets an immediate jolt in their return from nagging injuries, and Bartolo Colon's arm and his bat helped them past the Pirates.

Atlanta 7, Cincinnati 2: Matt Wisler broke a string of four consecutive losses, Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer for one of his three hits for the host Braves. Freeman was still hot one day after he became the first player this season to hit for the cycle.

Interleague

Toronto 13, Philadelphia 2: J.A. Happ gave up three hits and an unearned run in seven innings and the Blue Jays hit five home runs vs. the host Phillies.
