The Cleveland Indians unloaded pitcher Trevor Bauer in a reported trade involving three teams, hours after Major League Baseball fined him for throwing a ball over the center field fence in frustration as he was being pulled from a game on Sunday.
ESPN re-ported that Bauer, 9-8 with a 3.79 ERA and 185 strikeouts, will go the Reds and outfielder Yasiel Puig will go from Cincinnati to Cleveland. The Indians also will get pitcher Logan Allen from the Padres, who will receive outfield prospect Taylor Trammell, ESPN reported.
Cleveland lost 2-0 to the Houston Astros on Tuesday and fell three games behind the Twins in the AL Central.
Bauer was disciplined for his actions that came after allowing a two-run single to Nicky Lopez that gave the Royals a 7-5 lead with one out in the fifth inning of Cleveland's 9-6 loss Sunday. When manager Terry Francona emerged from the dugout to make a pitching change, Bauer turned, took a couple of steps and threw the ball over the 410-foot mark.
Francona pointed Bauer toward the dugout, and then followed closely behind him, and both disappeared into the tunnel. Bauer apologized to the organization and his teammates.
Mejia promoted
The Cardinals claimed former Twins lefthander Adalberto Mejia off waivers, and the Cardinals said the 26-year-old will join the major league team as soon as he's able to report to St. Louis.
In other bullpen-oriented moves Tuesday:
• The NL East-leading Atlanta Braves acquired hard-throwing reliever Chris Martin from the Texas Rangers for lefthander Kolby Allard, the Braves' first-round draft choice in 2014. Martin, whose fastball has averaged 96 mph this season, has 24 strikeouts and only one walk over his last 19 appearances since May 24. The Rangers optioned Allard to Class AAA Nashville.
