Indiana State beats Gophers 9-4 at Metrodome

Indiana State defeated the Gophers 9-4 on Sunday at the Metrodome to win two of the three games in their weekend baseball series.

Trailing 3-0, the Sycamores scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kody Kremer hit a grand slam for Indiana State (7-7) in that long inning. Four of the runs were unearned, thanks to two Gophers errors.

Troy Larson, Matt Halloran and Andy Henkemeyer all had two hits for the Gophers (12-8). Larson had two RBI. Halloran, who had two doubles, and Henkemeyer had one RBI apiece.

U softball rolls

Kaitlyn Richardson had two doubles and three RBI and Bree Blanchette hit a solo home run as the Gophers beat Georgia Southern 7-1 in the Sunshine Classic in Tallahassee, Fla. Nikki Anderson started for the Gophers (16-9) and pitched 4⅓ shutout innings for the victory. Georgia Southern (14-13) lost to the Gophers 5-0 on Saturday.

On track early

The Gophers' women's track and field team won eight events this past weekend in the UNLV Invitational, its first outdoor meet. Jeri Johnson-Chambers won the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 179 feet, 7 inches. Christina DeLakis took first in the shot put (49-¾). Madison Smith won the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.14) and ran the first leg of the winning 4x400 relay. The Gophers also swept the three jumps and the pole vault.
