The No. 9-ranked Gophers volleyball team fell in five sets to No. 3 Illinois on Friday night at the Sports Pavilion.

The Gophers (7-3) fell in their conference opener by scores of 25-20, 18-25, 22-25, 25-20 and 10-15.

Illinois sits at 12-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Brianna Haugen had her first career start for the Gophers and had seven kills with no errors. Hailey Cowles held a double double when she had a season-best 16 kills and 10 digs. Ashley Wittman had 18 kills and 16 digs, while Tori Dixon had 13. Jessica Granquist and Steffi Sooter each had 20 digs, while Mia Tabberson had 54 assists.

The loss ended a 10-match home winning streak.

The Gophers face Northwestern at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Sports Pavilion.

Gophers win in soccer

Taylor Uhl scored the game-winning goal with 58 seconds remaining to give the Gophers women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Michigan on Friday night in Ann Arbor, Mich.

As Michigan pressed to counterattack the Gophers , defender Marissa Price slipped in to steal an errant pass and clear it to midfield, where fellow junior Nicole Baier flicked the ball backward over the Wolverines back line.

Uhl ran down the ball and took advantage of her one-on-one opportunity with Michigan goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer by pushing a ball to the bottom right corner for the game-winner.

Minnesota ended the match with 22 shots, 11 of them on goal. Michigan had nine shots with five on goal.

The Gophers scored first when Lauren Bauer connected with Josie Solie off a corner kick in the 13th minute. Michigan's Nkem Ezurike evened the score in the 21st minute.

Clare Stachel scored on a penalty kick to give Michigan a 2-1 halftime lead,. and Uhl evened the score at 2-2 all when she rebounded an Olivia Bagnall shot.

The Gophers are 4-5-1, while Michigan is 6-3-1.

The Gophers travel to East Lansing, Mich., on Sunday to face Michigan State (8-2-0, 1-1-0 Big Ten).
