Patti Dusbabek's Holly Lane Gardens Bed & Breakfast encompasses nine acres of woodlands and gardens (www.hollylanegardens.com; 1-206-842-8959).
The Steamliner Diner serves breakfast and lunch every day and dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays near the Bainbridge Island Ferry terminal (www.streamlinerdiner.com; 1-206-842-8595).
A 40-minute ferry ride from Seattle, bucolic Bainbridge Island boasts nearly a dozen art galleries and outdoor pursuits such as hiking and bike riding.
Five beaches are easily accessible, including four acres of public waterfront at Strawberry Plant Park. The spot reflects the history of first- and second-generation Japanese emigres who first reached the island in 1889. During the Depression, the cooperative was cranking out 500 55-gallon barrels a day, barging the sugary berries to Seattle and the world.
A less-sweet legacy on the island focuses on the 1942 Japanese-American internment camp, the nation's first such lockup during World War II. A memorial can be found at Pritchard Park, on Eagle Harbor, which also features 42 species of birds, 17 acres of trails through forests and beaches, sequoias, cedars and views of Seattle, Mount Rainier and the Cascades.
That is, on a clear day. Rainfall totals can vary from one end of the island to the other, but more than 30 inches fall in a year. It's lovely from mid-July to the end of September.
