GETTING THERE

The closest airport is in Rapid City, S.D. (about 40 miles away), which gets nonstop service from Allegiant (from Las Vegas and Phoenix), American (Chicago and Dallas), Delta (Salt Lake City and the Twin Cities) and United (Denver and Chicago). All flights from elsewhere will connect through those cities.

CHECKING IN

The higher-end places in town are the Martin-Mason (www.martinmasonhotel .com, $99-$475, depending on room and season), which has eight rooms restored with an eye to outlaw days; the Celebrity (www.celebritycasins.com, $79-$299); and the Lodge at Deadwood (www.deadwoodlodge.com, $89-$450), which opened in 2009. There are a few affordable standbys tracing roots back about 100 years. Go with the Bullock (www.historic bullock.com, $45-$209).

EATING OUT

Jake's (www.themidnightstar.com) is said to be among the finer dining experiences in the state; the food is good but a bit overpriced. Locals prefer the Deadwood Social Club (www.saloon10.com), which sits above Saloon No. 10.
