IF YOU GO

Michigan's Mount Bohemia, a small ski area at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, is about 380 miles northeast of Minneapolis. It is a seven-plus hour drive through Wisconsin and then into Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Cabins are available for rent on the mountain. Hotels and dining are found in the nearby towns of Copper Harbor, Houghton and Hancock. Lift tickets cost $50. Season passes, which are sold only one day of the year (by phone and online, this year on Dec. 4), cost $99. Snowboarding, alpine skiing and telemark skiing are allowed. The ski area recommends strong-intermediate level of skill or higher. (A resort slogan -- tongue in cheek, but true -- states: "No beginners allowed.") Contact: 1-231-420-5405; www.mtbohemia.com.
