Federal agents fatally shot a man Saturday morning in south Minneapolis, setting off confrontations between protesters and agents at the scene.
It was the second fatal shooting this month involving federal agents who have arrived in Minnesota as part of a massive immigration enforcement operation. Minneapolis residents gathered in city parks to light candles and hold vigils after the shooting.
On Sunday, more subdued demonstrations continued throughout the Twin Cities as federal officials offered few new details.
Here’s what else you need to know:
- The man killed was identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, of Minneapolis.
- The Department of Homeland Security said Pretti was armed with a gun and two magazines of ammunition and circulated a photo of the weapon.
- Federal officials said a Border Patrol agent fired in self-defense. But several of the central claims made by federal officials remain unverified and are contradicted in part by video and witness accounts.
- A judge ordered the federal government to preserve evidence in the shooting.
- Minnesota investigators are collecting evidence from the shooting scene, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said.
- Eyewitness accounts filed in federal court described the chaotic scene. A pediatrician said agents did not immediately perform CPR or check for a pulse.
