In memory of road construction and maintenance workers who have been killed on the job, the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis will glow orange Tuesday night, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.

Since 1960, 34 MnDOT employees and 15 private sector contractors have died while working on the state's roads.

"These deaths are tragic reminders of the dangers men and women face every day, while they keep Minnesota's roads safe for all of us," Gov. Mark Dayton said. "Today, we mourn their loss, honor their courage, and recognize the sacrifices of their loved ones."

MnDOT proclaimed Tuesday Workers Memorial Day and held events in Mankato, Rochester and the agency's headquarters in Roseville.

"These important observances occur at a time when crews are actively working on road projects around the state," MnDOT Commissioner Zelle said. "MnDOT works on more than 300 state highway construction projects throughout Minnesota; that equates to a lot of orange barrels."

The day also comes with a reminder to motorists, who suffer the vast majority of injuries and deaths in work zones. The agency offered these tips for drivers:

• Stay alert

• Watch for signs, equipment and workers

• Minimize distractions, such as using cell phones, eating or drinking

• Avoid tailgating

• Follow posted speed limits and directional signs

• Stay in one lane while driving through a work zone
