Hurricane Bertha

On this date in 1996, Hurricane Bertha made landfall along the southeast coastof North Carolina as a Category 2 hurricane. Bertha quickly weakened aftermaking landfall; however, it turned northeastward spreading heavy rain andgusty winds along the East coast.Prior to making landfall in the United States, Bertha moved across the U.S.

Virgin Islands and near Puerto Rico as a hurricane causing widespread damageand flooding.

At its peak intensity, Bertha had sustained winds of 115 mph, making it astrong early season hurricane. There were 12 deaths related to Bertha and totaldamages were estimated at $371 million.
