HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE TERRARIUM
Mary Beth Gullickson of Bachman's offers a step-by-step demonstration:
1Choose your container, then add a layer of horticultural charcoal at the bottom. Top with good potting soil, to a depth of 1 to 2 inches. 2 Prepare plants by loosening roots. Use scissors to cut into and loosen root structure if plant is root-bound. 3 Create a shallow hole for the plant, set it in the soil, then use a paintbrush handle or other tool to firm the soil around plant, making sure roots are covered. 4 Finish with pebbles, if you wish, to add color and interest. Make sure they are clean and free of chemicals that could harm plants. 5 This finished terrarium, which features three plants (miniature kale, cyclamen and calandiva), cost about $25 to make, including the container.
