How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

Major U.S. stock indexes closed slightly lower Tuesday after recouping much of an early slump. The slide was brought on, in part, by a troubling rise in global long-term borrowing rates. The price of oil closed above $60 a barrel for just the third time this year, giving a boost to energy stocks.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 36.94 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 18,068.23.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 6.21 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,099.12.

The Nasdaq declined 17.38 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,976.19.

For the week:

The Dow is down 122.88 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 27.36 points, or 0.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 245.16 points, or 1.4 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 40.22 points, or 2 percent.
