Stocks fell sharply on Friday as a strong jobs report led investors to speculate that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates as soon as June as the economy continues to strengthen.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 278.94 points, or 1.5 percent, to 17,856.78.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 29.78 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,071.26.

The Nasdaq composite lost 55.44 points, or 1.1 percent, to 4,927.37.

For the week:

The Dow is down 275.92 points, or 1.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 33.24 points, or 1.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 36.16 points, or 0.7 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 33.71 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 12.36 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 191.32 points, or 4.04 percent
