How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Friday

The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed to a record high Friday as the energy sector continued to rebound with the climbing price of oil. Some encouraging earnings news from major companies also bolstered stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average remains 35 points short of its all-time high.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 46.97, or 0.3 percent, to 18,019.35.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 8.51 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,096.99.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 36.22, or 0.8 percent, to 4,893.84.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 195.06 points, or 1.1 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 41.52 points, or 2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite rose 149.44 points, or 3.2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 196.28 points, or 1.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 38.09 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 157.78 points, or 3.3 percent.
