How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major stock indexes fared on Monday

Another plunge in the price of oil pushed stocks sharply lower on Monday. Energy companies led the decline as crude dipped below $50 a barrel Monday. Other stocks also fell as traders worried that the drop could indicate a weaker global economy.

On Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 331.34 points, or 1.9 percent, to 17,501.65.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 37.62 points, or 1.9 percent, to 2,020.58.

The Nasdaq composite declined 74.24 points, or 1.6 percent, to 4,652.57.

For the year:

The Dow is down 321.42 points, or 1.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 38.32 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 83.48 points, or 1.8 percent.
