How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

The stock market endured its worst day in three weeks on Tuesday as investors fretted over Greece's debt crisis and a surge in the U.S. dollar. Investors seeking safety bought U.S. government bonds. U.S. markets were closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 190.48 points, or 1 percent, to 18,041.54.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed down 21.86 points, or 1 percent, to 2,104.20.

The Nasdaq composite lost 56.61 points, or 1.1 percent, to 5,032.75.

For the year:

The Dow is up 218.47 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 45.30 points, or 2.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 296.70 points, or 6.3 percent.
