How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

The stock market logged small losses on Tuesday as energy shares slipped lower with the price of oil.

Oil fell below fell $45 a barrel during trading, and has dropped almost 60 percent since June. The slump means much lower profits for energy companies.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 27.16 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,613.68.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index shed 5.23 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,023.03

The Nasdaq composite lost 3.21 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 4,661.50.

For the week:

The Dow is down 123.69 points, or 0.7 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 21.78 points, or 1.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 42.57 points, or 0.9 percent

For the year:

The Dow is down 209.39 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 35.87 points, or 1.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 74.56 points, or 1.6 percent.
