Encouraging news on the U.S. job market and inflation helped lift U.S. stocks higher on Thursday, snapping a three-day slump for the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index.
The rally pushed the S&P 500 to its latest record high, while the Dow came within 36 points of its own record. Technology stocks were among the biggest gainers.
On Thursday:
The Dow climbed 191.75 points, or 1.1 percent, to 18,252.24.
The S&P 500 index gained 22.62 points, or 1.1 percent, to 2,121.10.
The Nasdaq composite rose 69.10 points, or 1.4 percent, to 5,050.80.
For the week:
The Dow is up 61.13 points, or 0.3 percent.
