How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Thursday

Encouraging news on the U.S. job market and inflation helped lift U.S. stocks higher on Thursday, snapping a three-day slump for the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index.

The rally pushed the S&P 500 to its latest record high, while the Dow came within 36 points of its own record. Technology stocks were among the biggest gainers.

On Thursday:

The Dow climbed 191.75 points, or 1.1 percent, to 18,252.24.

The S&P 500 index gained 22.62 points, or 1.1 percent, to 2,121.10.

The Nasdaq composite rose 69.10 points, or 1.4 percent, to 5,050.80.

For the week:

The Dow is up 61.13 points, or 0.3 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 5 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 47.24 points, or 0.9 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 429.17 points, or 2.4 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 62.20 points, or 3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 314.74 points, or 6.7 percent.
