How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Thursday

Stocks closed mostly lower Thursday, led by declines in the energy sector as the price of oil resumed a long-term slide. Exxon Mobil and Chevron were among the biggest decliners in the Dow Jones industrial average

The Dow lost 117.16 points, or 0.6 percent, to 17,959.03.

The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 10.23 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,089.27.

The Nasdaq composite rose 9.55 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,992.38.

For the week:

The Dow is up 209.72 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 35.87 points, or 1.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 120.62 points, or 2.5 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 135.96 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 30.37 points, or 1.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 256.32 points, or 5.4 percent.
