How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Thursday

The stock market surged for a second day on Thursday, pushing major indexes back into positive territory for the year. Stocks rose on speculation that the world's central banks will continue their policies to bolster economic growth. The market also got a lift from an encouraging jobs report and stabilizing oil prices.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 323.35 points, or 1.8 percent, to 17,907.87.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 36.24 points, or 1.8 percent, to 2,062.14.

The Nasdaq composite rose 85.72 points, or 1.8 percent, to 4,736.19.

For the week:

The Dow is up 74.88 points, or 0.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 3.94 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 9.37 points, or 0.2 percent

For the year:

The Dow is up 84.80 points, or 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 3.24 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 0.13 point, less than 0.1 percent.
