How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Monday

U.S. stocks closed higher Monday, led by gains in energy shares as the price of crude oil surged. Volume was relatively light. Many overseas markets were closed for holidays.

On Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 117.61 points, or 0.7 percent, to 17,880.85.

The S&P 500 index gained 13.66 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,080.62.

The Nasdaq composite added 30.38 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,917.32.

For the year:

The Dow is up 57.78 points, or 0.3 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 21.72 points, or 1.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 181.26 points, or 3.8 percent.
