House releases proposed higher ed cuts

The state House has released its proposed budget for higher education.

It would cut higher ed by 10.9 percent from this year's funding. That's a cut of 14.1 percent from the "base" funding -- what higher ed was legislated to get before former Gov. Tim Pawlenty's unallotments.

Here are the proposed cuts, compared against this year's actuals:

University of Minnesota: -13.3 percent

Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU): -13.3 percent

State Office of Higher Education: -15.4 percent*

State Grant Program: +11.9 percent

Other financial aid: -20.7 percent

Student academic support programs: -15.4 percent

*Cuts to the Office of Higher Education will come out of administration. That office runs the State Grant Program, among other things, which are separate line items.

U President Robert Bruininks has already responded to the House committee's proposals. In a statement, he said, in part:
