For three hours Wednesday night, rumors buzzed about a megadeal that would have sent Carlos Gomez back to the Mets for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores. But it turned out to be all for naught.

Fans at Citi Field gave Flores a standing ovation. Tears welled up in Flores' eyes, overcome by the emotion of being dealt from the only team he has ever known. But by the end of a harried night, the deal had been agreed upon, contingent upon the review of medical records, only to have fallen apart.

"There is no trade," Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said. "Unfortunately, social media got ahead of the facts and it may have had an adverse affect for one of the players involved. It's an unfortunate situation."

A teammate took a selfie with Gomez, wishing him well. But he remained a Brewer.
