HISTORIC LODGES OF MINNESOTA

Each summer in the land of 10,000 (plus) lakes, the beach becomes the place to be. That's why so many resorts here have stood the test of time. With this Travel series on historic lodges, we visit three such places. We began with Grandview (read it at startribune.com/travel under "Midwest Getaways"). Next month we'll visit Burntside Lodge in Ely. Here are other favorites:

Douglas Lake Lodge: A cluster of rustic log buildings in Itasca State Park (www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/itasca/lodging/units_rooms.html).

Kettle Falls Hotel: Quirky hotel in the middle of Voyageurs National Park; accessible only by air or water (www.kettle fallshotel.com).

Ludlow's Island Resort: Classic log cabins on an island in Lake Vermilion (www.ludlowsresort.com).

Madden's: A 1,000-acre resort on Gull Lake (www.maddens.com).

Naniboujou: Famous for its colorful jewel box of a dining room on the North Shore of Lake Superior near Grand Marais. (www.naniboujou.com).

Peters Sunset Beach Resort:

Four generations have run this seasonal lodge on Lake Minnewaska near Glenwood (www.petersresort.com).

Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge: Golf is popular at this resort on Bay Lake near Deerwood (www.ruttgers.com).
