Hamline upsets St. Thomas in Division III Women's Frozen Four

Hamline defeated top-ranked St. Thomas 3-0 on Friday night in the second semifinal of the NCAA Division III Women's Frozen Four at St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights.

The Pipers, who will play Plattsburgh State at 7 p.m. Saturday in the title game at the same venue, took a 1-0 lead on Becca Zarembinski's goal 1 minute, 35 seconds into the game and quickly build upon it. Bre Simon scored 50 seconds later; it was her division-leading 27th goal of the season.

Madison Kolbow got Hamline's third goal at 11:52 of the second period on a power play.

Simon, a junior forward from Elk River, was named the top Division III player a day earlier.

Jaela O'Brien made 25 saves for the shutout; Eryn Cooley had 29 stops for St. Thomas.

The Tommies (25-2-2) won the MIAC regular-season and tournament titles, but their previous loss — 3-2 in overtime a month ago — also was to No. 4 Hamline (23-3-3).

Plattsburgh State 4, Adrian 1: Courtney Moriarty scored two goals and her center, Annie Katonka, had a goal and two assists as the second-ranked Cardinals (28-2) defeated the Bulldogs in the first semifinal. Jessica VonRuden scored five minutes into the third period to get the Bulldogs (23-5-2) within 2-1, but Madison Walker scored for Plattsburgh (N.Y.) State in the 14th minute and Katonka in the 17th.
