ANN ARBOR, MICH. – With Coach Jerry Kill back in Minnesota after another seizure, and with Mitch Leidner back in as the starting quarterback, the Gophers were dealing with all kinds of changes Saturday afternoon at Michigan Stadium.
Leidner fumbled on the opening drive, and Michigan quickly turned that into points, as Fitz Touissant rushed for an eight-yard touchdown.
But the Gophers came back with a 16-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a Leidner to Maxx Williams touchdown pass.
The teams traded possessions until Michigan got a 24-yard touchdown pass from Devin Gardner to Devin Funchess late in the first half, giving the Wolverines a 14-7 lead as they headed to the locker room.
Philip Nelson started at quarterback last week and was scheduled to start again but apparently tweaked his hamstring again late in the week.
Leidner got shaken up on a play in the second quarter, and Nelson entered for two plays before Leidner returned.
Leidner completed five of six passes for 30 yards and rushed 10 times for 44 yards.
Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner did not attempt a pass until mid-way through the second quarter. For the half, he completed seven of nine passes for 82 yards.
