MINNEAPOLIS — The Guthrie Theater has named Joseph Haj of the University of North Carolina's PlayMakers Repertory Company as its new artistic director.

The 51-year-old Haj (hahzh) was introduced Tuesday to staff and supporters of the regional theater in Minneapolis. He replaces Joe Dowling, who is stepping down after 20 years leading the Guthrie.

Haj has been producing artistic director at PlayMakers since 2006, overseeing a schedule of about 10 productions per season. He has also directed throughout the United States, including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Folger Theater in Washington.

He will take over July 1.

Dowling, the Guthrie's longest-serving artistic director, oversaw an era that included the Guthrie's move from its original location near the Walker Art Center to its massive three-stage complex overlooking the Mississippi River.
