The No. 7 Gophers wrestling team won the final four matches to defeat No. 26 Wisconsin 26-10 before 3,054 on Sunday, Jan. 25, at Maturi Pavilion.
Tied 10-10 after six matches, the Gophers (8-4, 2-2 Big Ten) got major-decision victories from 157-pounder Charlie Millard (157) and 165-pounder Andrew Sparks to open an 18-10 lead with two matches left. Ethan Riddle clinched the match for the Gophers with an 8-3 victory at 174 pounds before Max McEnelly closed out the victory with a 21-6 technical fall victory at 184 pounds.
The Gophers ended a two-match losing streak with the victory, which was their fourth in a row over the Badgers and 13th in the past 14 dual meets. It was the Gophers’ 70th victory in the 108 meetings between the programs.
The Badgers led 7-6 after Zan Fugitt’s 15-3 major decision over Brandon Morvari at 133 pounds.
Vance VomBaur put the Gophers up 10-7 with a 11-1 major decision over Carson Exferd at 141 pounds. The Badgers tied it with Joseph Zargo’s 4-1 victory over Drew Roberts at 149 pounds.
McEnelly, a redshirt sophomore from Waconia ranked No. 4 at 184, earned his technical fall in 2:31, the quickest in a dual meet in his career.
The Gophers wrestle No. 4 Iowa, on Friday, Jan. 30, in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes (9-3, 2-1) defeated No. 6 Nebraska 22-14 on Jan. 23 in Lincoln, Neb.
