Gophers wrestlers take third in 34-team Southern Scuffle

After holding a half-point lead after the first day, the Gophers finished in third place in the Southern Scuffle, a 34-team wrestling tournament at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Penn State won with 189 points. Oklahoma State was second with 164.5, Minnesota third with 161.

Two Gophers won individual championships. Tony Nelson edged Nick Gwiazdowski of North Carolina 1-0 at heavyweight and Scott Schiller beat Kyven Gadson of Penn State 6-3 at 197 pounds.

Alexis Nelson, 15, of St. Paul, defeated top-seeded Chloe Ouellet-Pizer of Chapel Hill, N.C., 6-3, 6-4 to win the Girls' 18-and-under USTA Winter Nationals in Scottsdale, Ariz.
