The fifth-ranked Gophers wrestling team improved to 6-0 in the Big Ten with a 22-12 dual victory Friday over No. 10 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., setting up a showdown with third-ranked Penn State on Sunday at the Sports Pavilion.
Zach Sanders (125 pounds), David Thorn (133), Danny Zilverberg (149), Cody Yohn (165), Kevin Steinhaus (184) and heavyweight Tony Nelson won for the Gophers (15-3, 6-0).
The Gophers led 9-0 after the night's first two matches and never relinquished the lead. Sanders, ranked No. 5 nationally, opened the meet by pinning Sean Boyles at 4 minutes, 46 seconds. Sanders improved to 24-2, with bonus points in 17 of his victories.
Gophers women skate past Bemidji State The Gophers scored four goals on 13 shots in the first period and defeated Bemidji State 4-1 in a WCHA women's hockey game at Ridder Arena.
The Gophers (21-7-2, 16-7-2) scored four unanswered goals after Erin Cody scored on a penalty shot for Bemidji State (12-14-3, 10-12-3) 30 seconds into the game. Jen Schoullis scored two goals for the Gophers.
Texas running back chooses Minnesota The Gophers added another player to their 2011 class of football recruits, running back David Cobb of Killeen, Texas. The university announced Cobb's signing of a national letter Friday. He's the 24th player in coach Jerry Kill's first group of recruits.
The 5-11, 205-pound Cobb has the potential to play defense as well. Kill said Cobb could help the Gophers "in a couple different areas." Cobb rushed for more than 1,400 yards and scored 17 touchdowns last season for Ellison High School.
U baseball picked to win Big Ten The Gophers were picked to finish first in the Big Ten in a poll conducted by Baseball America.
