Gophers wrestlers lose twice at South Beach Duals

The Gophers wrestling team lost twice Friday at the South Beach Duals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., falling to No. 24 North Carolina 25-16 and to No. 12 Cornell 22-19.

Minnesota won nine matches in the two dual meets. No. 5-ranked Ethan Lizak at 125 pounds, No. 9 Nick Wanzek at 165 and unranked Chris Pfarr at 174 each won twice.

Two Gophers beat ranked wrestlers. Owen Webster, at 184, defeated No. 20 Chip Ness of the Tar Heels 4-1.

Pfarr edged No. 16 Brandon Womack of Cornell 6-4 with a reversal in overtime, giving Minnesota a 19-8 lead. But the Big Red won the final three matches. At heavyweight, Jeremy Sweany edged Rylee Streifel of the Gophers 4-3 to break a 19-all tie.

Tommies ranked No. 8

The St. Thomas baseball team is ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II preseason poll recently released.

The Tommies were 29-18 last season and were MIAC regular-season co-champions with Bethel. St. Thomas returns junior Henry DeCaster, the conference pitcher of the year, and two other all-region pitchers, seniors Ryan Zimmerman and Drew Molin.

St. Scholastica of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference is No. 23 in the preseason poll.
