Gophers wrestlers in second after Day 1 of Southern Scuffle

The Gophers wrestling team was in second place Tuesday after the first of two days of competition at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Big Ten rival Penn State leads with 102 points, followed by the Gophers with 94. South Dakota State is in 20th place in the 25-team tournament with 14 points.

Seven Gophers are undefeated and remained alive in their quests for individual championship titles: Chris Dardanes (at 133 pounds), Nick Dardanes (141), Dylan Ness (149), Logan Storley (174), Kevin Steinhaus (184), Scott Schiller (197) and Tony Nelson (Hwt).

Thirteen other wrestlers also competed for Minnesota (two unattached), with five of them remaining to compete in the consolation bracket Wednesday: David Thorn (125), Pat Smith (157), Danny Zilverberg (157), Cody Yohn (165) and Brett Pfarr (197).

The second day of competition will conclude with the finals at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
