The No. 1-rated Gophers' wrestling team opened its season by winning seven titles at the Bison Open on Saturday in Fargo, N.D.
Four wrestlers were repeat winners. Nick Dardanes, at 141 pounds this year, won his fourth title. Logan Storley won his third, all at 174. And Chris Dardanes, at 141, and Dylan Ness, at 157, were second-time champions.
The three other Minnesota champions were Sam Brancale at 125, Jake Short at 149 and Nick Wanzek at 165. They all beat a teammate in the finals.
MIAC soccer champs
Eric Schneider scored in the 29th minute and Patrick Roth in the 80th as Gustavus beat St. John's 2-0 on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn., to win the MIAC men's soccer tournament.
Keeper Brett Ylonen made three saves for the Gusties (15-4-1), who were the second seed. Fourth-seeded St. John's (13-7) had 11 shots, matching its opponent.
With the win, Gustavus got the MIAC's automatic bid for the NCAA Division III tournament; the complete field will be announced at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
• Augsburg defeated visiting Concordia (Moorhead) 1-0 for the MIAC women's soccer title. Molly Allen scored the lone goal for the Auggies (16-4) in the 44th minute.
Revenge for Tommies
St. Thomas defeated host Augsburg 25-17, 31-29, 25-21 on Saturday to win the MIAC volleyball tournament for the third year in a row. Jill Greenfield had 16 kills and 13 digs to lead the Tommies (24-6), who shared the regular-season title with the Auggies (23-5) but lost their head-to-head match.
