Gophers wrestlers beat Illini; women's hockey loses to UMD

Top-ranked Zach Sanders overcame a seven-point deficit and defeated Illinois' Jesse Delgado, keeping him undefeated and leading the Gophers to a 25-9 Big Ten wrestling dual victory over Illinois on Friday in Champaign, Ill.

In addition to Sanders' 14-13 victory at 125 pounds, the Gophers (6-2, 3-0) also got a pin from Dylan Ness at 149 pounds and a major decision by Kevin Steinhaus at 184.

Illinois is 10-2 and 2-2.

UMD skates past Gophers women Minnesota Duluth countered a goal by Kelly Terry one minute into the game with three unanswered goals in the first period on the way to a 4-2 women's hockey victory over the Gophers in Duluth.

Jenna McPharland tied it 33 seconds after Terry's goal, and Haley Irwin and Audrey Cournoyer added goals for UMD (12-8-1, 9-7-1 WCHA) in the first period.

Sarah Davis also scored for the Gophers (18-4-1, 12-4-1).

The teams meet again Saturday night.

Distance runners win two titles at Nebraska Harun Abda won the 1,000 meters in 2 minutes, 26.32 seconds and Gophers teammate Nick Hutton led a 1-2-3-4 Gophers finish in the mile (4:11.61) on the first day of the Holiday Inn Invitational indoor track and field meet in Lincoln, Neb.

Etc. • Three Minnesotans have been invited to compete at the Winter X Games Jan. 26-29 in Aspen, Colo. Levi LaVallee of Longville (snowmobile freestyle, best trick), Dan Brisse of Richmond (snowboard real snow) and Ryan Paul of Cottage Grove (snowboard street) are among more than 200 athletes invited.

Rose Hollermann of Elysian and Sarah Binsfeld of Vadnais Heights have been named to the U.S. women's wheelchair basketball team that will compete at this summer's Paralympic Games in London.
