DULUTH – Senior center Hannah Brandt had two goals and one assist and senior defenseman Milica McMillen had one goal and two assists as the No. 3 Gophers routed Minnesota Duluth 7-3 on Friday at Amsoil Arena, scoring on all three power plays they had.
"Going three-for-three on the power play was big," Gophers coach Brad Frost said, "but I think even better was scoring four five-on-five goals, something that we've been talking a lot about."
Kate Schipper and Hannah Brandt scored early and late in the opening period to give Minnesota (26-3-1, 21-3-1 WCHA) a 2-0 lead.
It was 4-1 Minnesota after a dominant middle period during which the Gophers outshot the Bulldogs 33-5. Katherine McGovern of UMD scored the first goal in the fourth minute. But later Kelly Pannek and McMillen got power-play goals 1 minute, 49 seconds apart for the Gophers.
UMD (12-18-1, 9-15-1) scored early in the third period, but the Gophers answered 19 seconds later when Taylor Williamson scored. Ashleigh Brykaliuk had the third UMD goal 11 minutes into the final period. Brandt and Dani Cameranesi got the final two Minnesota goals.
Maddie Rooney, a freshman from Andover, made a school-record 61 saves for UMD; Amanda Leveille had 13 and Sidney Peters 12 for the Gophers, who own an 18-game unbeaten streak (17-0-1) against the Bulldogs.
