The Gophers opened the volleyball season with a victory Friday, defeating Notre Dame 3-0 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Sports Pavilion.

The Gophers, ranked 12th in the nation, won the sets 26-24, 27-25, 25-18.

The Gophers' Paige Tapp had six kills, hit .600 in 10 attempts and had seven blocks, all career highs. Daly Santana had 13 kills in 37 swings, two aces, five digs and a match-high 16.5 points. Katie Schau had a match-high 28 assists, four digs and three blocks. The Gophers hit .184 to Notre Dame's .106 and outblocked the Irish 13.5-11.5.

The Gophers play Louisville at 7 p.m. Saturday in a match to be televised live on the Big Ten Network. Wisconsin defeated Louisville 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17) in the other Big Ten/ACC Challenge game played Friday at the Sports Pavilion.

Attendance was announced at 3,018.

U wins in soccer

The Gophers women's soccer team opened its home schedule with a 1-0 victory over Marquette on Friday.

The Gophers (2-1-0) and Golden Eagles (1-2-0) played 59 minutes before freshman Sydney Squires scored on an assist by junior Taylor Stainbrook. It was Squires' third goal of the season.

Minnesota held Marquette, which received votes in the latest NSCAA rankings, for the remaining 31 minutes to take its second shutout of the season.

The Gophers will play a home game at 1 p.m. Sunday against South Dakota State.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs made six saves for the Gophers.

• Ray Sadler went 2-for-3 with a triple and a double and scored twice, propelling the Kansas City T-Bones to a 5-2 victory over the St. Paul Saints in the first game of a doubleheader in Kansas City, Kan.

• The NHRA Minnesota State Championships will be held Sunday at Grove Creek Raceway in Grove City. Racing will begin at 9 a.m.
