The Gophers volleyball team routed California-Irvine 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 on Friday in its home opener, part of the Diet Coke Classic at the Sports Pavilion.

Daly Santana led Minnesota (3-2) with 15 kills and hit .538 while the team's twins, Hannah and Paige Tapp, each had 10 kills on 16 attacks with two errors, hitting an identical .500.

North Dakota State defeated Central Florida 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22 in the round-robin meet.

The Gophers will play NDSU at 10 a.m. Saturday and Central Florida at 7 p.m.


• Trailing 2-0, the St. Paul Saints will play the Sioux City Explorers at 7 p.m. Saturday at CHS Field in St. Paul in Game 3 of their best-of-five American Association semifinal series. Dustin Crenshaw (14-2, 2.43) will pitch for the Saints against John Straka (11-3, 3.27). The Explorers won games in Iowa earlier this week by scores of 3-2 and 12-1.

• Sophomore Maddie Gaffney's goal in the 12th minute gave the Gophers a 1-0 victory over New Mexico at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in women's soccer.

• Liz Berkholtz took first place (21:48.3 for 6K) to lead the Gophers women's cross-country team to the title in the four-team Oz Memorial Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights. Minnesota had 33 points, edging Iowa State by four. In the men's race at the same distance, South Dakota State, led by winner Trent Lusignan (18:40.6) of Shakopee, won the three-team meet with 34 points, and the Gophers were five back. Sophomore Obsa Ali (19:04.4) was the top Gophers finisher, placing fourth.

 Sam Warning scored a goal and defenseman Mike Reilly, another former Gopher, had two assists as the Wild beat the New York Rangers 5-2 in their first game in the Traverse City (Mich.) Prospects Tournament.
