Sophomore Alexis Hart had 14 kills and freshman Jasmyn Martin 10 as the No. 6 Gophers swept No. 22 Michigan 25-21 25-21, 25-20 in a Big Ten volleyball match in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Stephanie Samedy, another freshman, added seven kills and a season-high nine blocks. Molly Lohman had 10 blocks, Dalianliz Rosado 15 digs and Samantha Seliger-Swenson 34 assists to lead the visitors in those statistical categories.
Minnesota (15-2, 4-2 Big Ten), which trailed in every set, hit .354 while the Wolverines (12-6, 2-4) hit .202.
Big match for U soccer team
The Gophers women's soccer team (8-2-3, 4-1-1 Big Ten) will host Purdue (9-3-1, 4-1-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Minnesota has won four conference games in a row and is tied with the Boilermakers for second place in the conference race.
Sydney Squires of the Gophers leads the conference with 12 goals, and teammate April Bockin is first in assists with 10.
Maddy Williams of Purdue is next in both categories with nine goals, five of them game-winners, and eight assists. Squires has four game-winning goals.
U swimmers split
The Gophers' two swimming and diving teams opened the season with the women winning and the men losing at Florida State.
The women's dual came down to the last event, the 200-yard freestyle, which the Gophers won by one-hundreth of a second for 11 points. The Seminoles got only four for second place and lost 153.5 to 146.5.
